House Shopping

So, Claire and I are moving to Hamilton, Ontario , and we spent yesterday with the real estate agent looking at houses. Actually, we only got to see two houses because everything else that we were interested had already sold. And one of the houses that we looked at sold while we were walking through it. The real estate agent actually got a call on her cell phone while Claire and I were upstairs wandering around and said, "I hope you're not getting attached to this one..."

Strangely enough, the house that sold while we were in it had peeling plastic flooring, buckled walls, no parking whatsoever and very small rooms upstairs. Also, one of those European style showers where you have to hold a hose over your head.

What's really confusing is that the second house we looked at was really quite charming, and seemingly in much better shape than the first, but had been on the market for over a year. Now, you might think that it had structural problems, but nobody has even been interested enough in buying it to bring a building engineer through. So, we don't get that really. The only thing we can figure is that the basement, with a ceiling that is only 5 feet from the floor might be what's turning people off.

Anyway, we're looking at buying a house, which is very exciting. I will still have a room in Buffalo (I have to for my scholarship), but we will have a little place of our own too.

With a basement like that you could stage your own reenactment of Being John Malkovitch.
