First they came for the idiots...

Once great historian turned Holocaust denying creep David Irving has been arrested and sentenced to three years in Austrian jail for claiming the Holocaust was a myth.

As much as I'd like to be a smart-ass and say that it's just a myth that he is in jail... it's still very disturbing to someone who grew up in a country where people are allowed, nay encouraged, to say stupid things, to see someone be jailed for saying something stupid. It's bad for everyone, in fact, aside from Holocaust deniers who need a martyr.

What's really scary about it is the way so many Europeans look for ways to justify it. Someone I've gotten to know from Finland, for example, excuses it on the grounds that he is not a "real" historian. Her assessment of him is probably correct, but that's not the real point.

I don't consider myself a "real" historian, either, but I shudder at the thought that I might somehow be arrested for, just as an example, denying that Christ was an actual living historical person. Yet, thanks to this precedent, the way is now clear for that potentiality, especially given the unfortunate trend toward international law.

What seems strange to me is how many people were upset about that Turkish fellow being arrested for "defaming the nation" about the Armenian genocide and weren't upset about this.
