Okay, you guys know the drill. I'll try not to post these all at once this time. It's probably a bit blasphemous to watch Bergman on litte Youtube videos. But, our video store doesn't have this one and I've never seen it. For the record, Persona is probably my favorite movie of all time.

Okay, so thoughts on this one...
1. Woody Allen probably got the idea for his cheap/straightforward credits from Bergman.
2. As usual, he has the classical music here. I don't know if you could make a movie that starts like this without running the risk of being called pretentious. But, Bergman really was a genius, so he gets away with it.
3. Sven Nvkist's cinematography is great here, as usual. I like the saturated colors.
4. The slow pace- by the eary 70s, Bergman was well-established enough that viewers would have known what to expect as far as his pace. I've often said that Bergman's movies are best if you like looking at people's faces. I do, and honestly I think most movies are editted at too quick a pace, so I have no problem with this. It's a bit like watching a play and Bergman directed a lot of plays as well as movies.
5. 'It is early Monday morning and I am in pain'. This is a typical Bergman line. Already it looks like we're in his usual territory of existential crisis.
6. Also, his typical social milieu. Some find his movies too 'bourgeois', but it doesn't bother me.
7. And it's great to see that Liv Ullmann is in this one. The two of them did their best work together.
