Cries and Whispers (1972) - Part 2/9

1. It looks like the women have returned to the house they grew up in. I like the scene with Ullmann and the doll house- there's sort of a motiff in Bergman movies of theatre sets, doll houses, magic lanterns, and the like.

2. The scene with the mother in the yard is a little corny, but I love how it has a visua echo of the painting seen earlier. The idea that bourgeois life is constraining just in being tedious is not new, but Bergman's sympathy helps a lot.

3. And now we have a magic lantern. Bergman loved these things as a boy. His autobiography was titled The Magic Lantern.

4. I like the dual longing in the two scenes with the doctor.

Clearly, though, this one is not going to be a madcap farce.
