I like how awkwardly the scene with the daughter and the doctor plays out. Bergman's period pieces always play, to me, like chamber dramas in which the characters are desperately unhappy.
The next scene is a flashback involving the doctor and the daughter Marie. The conversation is devastating. The staging is so-so and the cinematography is solid. But the dialogue is great. Bergman's dialogue is both like nothing real people ever say and still pretty staggering.
In the scene, the doctor uses the lines on Marie's face to show the physical toll of indolence and boredom. In the next scene, her husband returns with the same sort of shell-shocked expression on his face. Clearly, he knows that his wife has slept with the doctor. Both of these characters are so trapped in this life that you expect one of them to burn down the house before long.
